Travel : 5 places in New Zealand that make me happy

Waiheke Island, Auckland

A very popular destination for weddings and for those who enjoy wine tasting. It is roughly a thirty minute ferry ride from Auckland CBD. I would rent a house and stay for a few days so you can enjoy the vineyards and the amazing beaches! My sister recently had her wedding on Waiheke and it was magical. You feel like you are millions of miles away from the stress and chaos of a city and can go there and back in a day if you don’t want to stay overnight.

Wanaka – AJ Hacket Bungy / Oxbow

Wanaka is by far one of the coolest towns in New Zealand and home to a lot of adventure sports. There is an energy about this town all year round that is vibrant and fun and always at the top of my list when I want a getaway. Bungy jumping is what most people head to Wanaka for, it is not only terrifying and fun, it’s a great way to feel alive and the rush afterwards is addicting. If you do make it to Wanaka, head to Oxbow. You can shoot guns, fly helicopters, throw knives and speed around the river in a crazy fast boat. I think this town is the perfect place to really push your own boundaries and get an adrenaline fix.

Orakei Basin, Auckland

I love this little (almost) lake that is so close to the city. Perfect for walks or water sports and conveniently located at the end of my street in Auckland. Being in water is a real re-set for me and when I am feeling flighty or overwhelmed, I feel it is the best cure. I have recently learnt how to wakeboard and nothing beats having a few laps behind the jet ski and then ordering some fish and chips and eating on the beach watching the sunset! There is a great fish and chip shop called Fish Pot Café located right on Mission Bay, they have the best grilled snapper and fries!

Pauanui, Coromandel

My family has had a holiday home here for years and it is my fav place on the planet. Everyone rides bikes to get around, there is good surf, hidden waterfalls and a huge mountain with epic views. It’s only an hour and a half away from Auckland and has a great small summer town vibe! This place will always hold a special place in my heart, most of my fond family memories all took place here and I think it will always be the place I think of in New Zealand that I will identify as my happiest place and the place I think of when I think of home.

Queenstown

Fine dining and perfect scenery always makes me smile and I believe Queenstown is one of the most stunning places in New Zealand. It’s a little expensive to get there, but well worth it for sure! There will most likely be a line around the block, but you have to try a Fergburger. Considered by most as the best burger joint in the country, I promise you will not be disappointed.
