Nakita Turner is a 15 year-old kiwi girl ready to take on the world. The Christchurch based has taken her experiences with bullying to a whole new level with a new anti-bullying campaign alongside an awesome song.
At just 13 years old, Nakita decided she needed to make her voice heard and started putting pen to paper on her song ‘One Voice’. She visited six schools around Christchurch, interviewing over 180 students about their experience with bullying. Nakita formed a mentorship with NZ band The Dukes and ‘One Voice’ was born.
The ‘One Voice’ project includes Massad featuring on the track, Kristina Webb lending her hand with illustrations, Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post Production team edited the video and ‘Live for Tomorrow’ jumped on board to get the word out there!
We spoke to Nakita about how she came up with the concept of the musical project and what she hopes to achieve by sharing it musically.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE CONCEPT OF THIS MUSICAL PROJECT?
An idea came to me about a year and a half ago to write a song that would hopefully make a difference. I’ve experienced bullying and I know that there are so many people out there hurting from this problem, so I really wanted to do something about that. Music is such a massive influence in our culture, and if you can thread a message through music, it will reach many people. This is how “One Voice” started, simply with a small idea! “One Voice” is not just a song, it’s a movement, standing up against bullying. We all have voice and this is our chance to use it!
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE FROM SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCE MUSICALLY?
Through this song, I really want to reach out to people who are struggling! If it helps one person, that’s all that matters. I really hope to encourage people to stand up to this problem and not just accept it as normal.
What an inspirational young lady, using her experiences to make sure other people in New Zealand and worldwide know there is hope at the end of the tunnel.
