Interview: MKTO

They came, they saw and they conquered. MKTO flew into Auckland early in May and described to me by a friend as ‘two of the most down to earth guys in the industry’ I was excited to meet the talented duo and see for myself how awesome they were.

My expectations were definitely exceeded and they agreed with me that the world LOVE should be used more so I was already well on board from the moment we met!

I hear you are already working on the next record.

We like to piece it all together, if we get a melody stuck in our head, then we bring that to the studio. But we have one song we are hoping will be the title of the new record.

Are you finding performing now easy and stress free?

It is a bit second nature for sure. But it hasn’t always been like that. Our first show was just, bad, you know with nerves, finally getting to do something that you’ve always wanted to do and it actually happening is really cool.

Do you see your sound changing?
Just a bit more mature, more in depth, you will be able to hear the growth. We have a lot more to say; well we always have a lot to say!

I love that you guys are playful and fun, will you keep that?
We will always be the quirky dudes, we want to have fun and be diverse.

What does success mean to you?

We never got in to this for any other reason than just to be happy doing something you love. We are happy just being able to pay our bills and doing something we want to do. Being happy and breaking the mold, doing something different and not being afraid

What would you say is the biggest sacrifice for you at the moment?

Not seeing your family, on the road constantly, relationships are impossible. Anything you want to do in life there will always be a sacrifice, but if you love what you do than anything is worth a sacrifice.

What is the best advice that your mothers have given you?

Be humble, be thankful, be happy and smile. The golden rule is to do to others as you would want done to you.

What is the goal for 2014?

Having our headlining tour and that is coming up!

What have you learnt about yourself so far this year?

That we wouldn’t be able to do it without each other. It’s true, that’s why I hated acting, it was lonely. It is different for everybody. I love that with music we are free and we can be us, which is awesome.

Have you changed a lot over the last few years being in this industry?

We are growing up, and we are learning about ourselves and growing up in life and how to handle different situations.

I loved my time with the guys and am so excited for what is in store for them and will they be back? Yes they are super keen to jump off the Harbour Bridge and love New Zealand!
