May 2024 Favourites

Happy May! This month we share the Awkward Talks Podcast featuring kiwi musicians, a book from squash champion Dame Suzy D, Anne Hathaway’s new romance film, a night market and the Comedy Festival is on!

What to listen to: Awkward Talks Podcast
As May is NZ Music Month, it feels fitting to share a podcast focused on ‘discussing the good, the bad and the Awkward with your favourite artists’. Hosted by singer and songwriter Issy Walker, their latest episodes with RIIKI REID and Drax Project’s Shaan Singh are out now. Plus you can catch up on last year’s season that’s chock-a-full of conversations with epic creatives based right here in Aotearoa. You can listen to the Awkward Talks Podcast on Spotify now. Image: Award Talks NZ

What to read: Dame Suzy D: My Story by Susan Devoy
‘Blunt, honest, wise and warm’ is how NZ comedian Michele A’Court describes Dame Susan Devoy’s new book. Dame Suzy D: My Story follows the journey (in her own words) of New Zealand’s greatest squash player, a four-time world squash champion and someone who’s fierce and powerful nature was recently shown to the nation on Celebrity Treasure IslandDame Suzy D: My Story is out now, you don’t want to miss reading about ‘a rollicking story of a life well lived’ (Petra Bagust). Image: Allen & Unwin

What to watch: The Idea of You
First things first, I’m a big Anne Hathaway fan so when I saw this new film being teased online with her in a leading role (both on and off screen), I was already intrigued. Anne stars alongside Purple Hearts’ Nicholas Galitzine in The Idea of You, a film adaptation from Robinne Lee’s romance book that follows the unexpected relationship of a 40-year-old single mother and a 24-year-old lead singer of a boyband. The Idea of You is available now via Prime Video. Image: Prime Video

What to eat: Night markets
There are weekly night markets up and down the country that you’ve probably checked out – heck you may even be a regular (the ultimate food court, am I right!). This month I thought I’d share that the Silo Markets in Auckland have added an additional evening to their schedule. You can find them on both Saturday and Sunday night down on North Wharf, browse the many varieties of food for dinner (and of course, dessert!). Image: Heart of the City

Who to follow: Comedy Fest
May is also NZ International Comedy Festival month! Instead of trying to pick one comedian on this year’s line-up to mention in this section, I thought we could share the official Instagram page of the event as there’s too many incredible shows to go and see! So this is your friendly reminder that it has just kicked off – check out the program and show your support by heading to some shows (and having a jolly good laugh at the same time)! @nzcomedyfestival Image: NZ Comedy Festival
