Let’s Talk AboutSelf Love

Self-Love, Definition: The instinct or desire to promote one’s own well-being; regard for or love of one’s self.

I’ve been going through a bit of a rough patch recently and I was having a chit chat recently and someone mentioned that the best piece of advice they’ve been given is about the importance of self love and looking after your own wellbeing.

I speak from experience when I say that self love isn’t something that is going to come easy but here’s a couple of tips and tricks that I’ve come across and have been trying to mould more into my life schedule to help with overall wellbeing.

“You’re allowed to be both a masterpiece and a work in progress simultaneously.

Do Something for Yourself
It doesn’t have to be something extravagant, it could literally be taking an hour away from everything and catching up on your favourite show (I’ve been catching up on Love Island UK) or putting together your favourite meal (I personally love to take time out for a bit of baking – cookies, brownies, muffins, whatever ingredients I have available). Perhaps it’s something even that you’ve been wanting to accomplish or try for a while, that’s a bit out of your comfort zone.

“Fall in love with taking care of yourself – mind, body and soul.

Find Your Happy Place
‘Happy Place’is a broad term, this could be a one-off place or one you regularly visit – I find a walk up Mt Eden (as it’s pedestrians only, you can’t drive up) to take in the city from above always gives me a fresh perspective. I also enjoy going to the beach for a picnic or sunset (or both!) or a happy place activity is going to one of our favourite food places followed by a concert/event with my friends, music is honestly the best.

“It’s important that you spread good vibes in real life and not just online.

The Importance of Sleep
You know how the specialists and pros are always harping on about how important it is to get enough sleep to function? Yeah, well they’re right. It’s hard though with modern life to get the full 8 hours recommended for adults each night, but it’s important to try and get as much as possible. I know I’m a culprit of using technology right before bed, which is not helpful so I’ve started to cut down on that and put the ‘night mode’on my phone in hopes I won’t get distracted and just sleep –  ha!

“Don’t wait for everything to be perfect before you decide to enjoy your life.

Take Time to Zen
Do something that won’t stress you out and be an overall calming experience like cleaning out your room or workspace, taking a ‘me, myself and I’bath time, carrying out meditation exercises or having some technology-free time and curl up with a good book (or glossy magazine if that’s your style!). Go outside, breathe some fresh air and take in the beautiful scenery.

“Live for the moments you can’t put into words.

Put Your Wellbeing First
How you are feeling is important, it’s also crucial to recognise that it’s OK to let out your emotions (like I do with my bestie) instead of bottling it up – that will stress you even more and more until you explode. Looking after your wellbeing is essential to contributing to a healthy life-style and is like an art of balancing everything.

“You are powerful, beautiful, brilliant and brave.
