Author, adventurer and speaker Sequoia Schmidt spends 5 mins with us to talk about her new book.
*What was the inspiration for your project and how long had you been working on it before launching?
This particular book took almost a year, not consistently, but periodically through that time I was writing. More importantly than writing the story itself, I had to live the story first.
*Can you share with us what a typical day looks like for you?
I don’t really have a typical day. I travel a lot, but I will say there is consistency within my schedule when it comes to my team and our work ethic. So, I would say the one thing that remains typical within my day-to-day life is a concentration and focus on creative work.
*The industry that you’re in now, was that always a career pathway you wanted to explore? And if not always, what sparked your initial interest?
It’s hard to say “always” I have had my company since I was 17 years old. I will say that I always knew that I wanted to do something in a creative field. In regard to my own personal writing, that’s not something that came until many years after I was a publisher. I firmly believe in powerful stories and I’m grateful that I spend my life telling those stories, including my own.
*Do you have a highlight experience from your years of work in the creative space?
As a publisher, I have been able to work with some incredible people. One of my highlighted experiences was a children’s book that we launch called “Strong Women.” During the launch event that we hosted in New York City I was able to share the stage with Congresswoman Maloney, Gloria Allred, and Gloria Steinem to discuss social and political issues that have affected women throughout the decades.
Working with legends like these has made my years in publishing well worth the challenges that come through entrepreneurship.
*Can you share something that may surprise people about what could go on behind the scenes of your work?
I always write on planes. I find that being confined to an airplane generally for an international flight produces some of my best work.
*Where would we find you in your spare time?
The roof of my office in Los Angeles, my team, and I have made it into a little oasis. I generally spend my weekends skydiving at the Dropzone. And I always love a good yoga class.
*Best advice you’ve ever been given?
At the end of your life, the only thing that truly matters is the impact you have left on others.
