October 2024 Faves

Happy October a.k.a the Spooky season/month is officially here (even though the Christmas stuff is already at the shops, what’s up with that?!) This month we chat about Karen O’Leary’s new podcast season, Florence Given’s latest book, RuPaul Drag Race Downunder’s back and Late Night Art!

What to listen to: Full Disclosure
Strap in, Karen O’Leary’s Full Disclosure podcast has just released the first few episodes of its third season. ‘Coming out ain’t easy. Some of New Zealand’s bravest, most famous, and unapologetically queer Kiwis share their coming out journeys’ including musician Ny Oh talking about touring with Harry Styles, actor and comedian Chris Parker discussing differences between sexuality and personality, to name a few with many more incredible humans part of the podcast episodes! Image: Stuff

What to read: Women Living Deliciously by Florence Given
Best-selling author Florence Given (of Women Don’t Owe You Pretty), is this month releasing her new book Women Living Deliciously. Florence’s new piece of writing is set to ‘help women uncover their sense of awe and wonder that has been buried by the layers of shame and self-objectification that get piled on us by the patriarchy’. If you loved London-based Florence’s other writing, you’re likely in a good place to add this new one to your empowerment bookshelf! Image: Hachette

What to watch: RuPaul’s Drag Race Downunder

The new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race Downunder is on its way (premiering next week!) and has a little bit of a makeover, in the form of Michelle Visage taking the hosting reins for the latest series. If you’ve watched the other three seasons of Drag Race Downunder (or even caught the other worldwide series), you’re sure to love Season 4, I can’t wait! Image: WOW Presents Plus

What to eat: Late Night Art
A bit of a different ‘what to eat’ this month as Auckland’s Art Week (running from now until the 13th) is on which features a bunch of different activations and events, including Late Night Art on October 10th that features performances, immersive installations, local artist stalls and galleries open late. This is a good excuse to head into town, pop by one of your favourite eateries and check out some of the fun Art Week happenings while you’re at it! Image: Sacha Stejko / Heart of the City

Who to follow: @chrxstopher.hall
You’ve likely seen British comedian’s Chris Hall on TikTok or Instagram, in one of the ‘background singers’ videos with Lizzie Hall, that are just so good (and so accurate!?). Chris released sketches during lockdown and years later he is still on a great content wave. Check him out if you haven’t already! @chrxstopher.hall
