March 2024 Favourites

Happy March! This month we share Behind the Smile, a book from NZ surgeon Ineke Meredith, Zendaya and Timothee Chalamet are back on the big screen, new recipes plus a cute Instagram account to check out!

What to listen to: Behind the Smile
NZ-based mental health charity Voices of Hope, co-founded by Genevieve Mora and Jazz Thornton (pictured), have released their latest impactful project, Behind the Smile, which highlights 11 kiwis who have faced mental health challenges. The visual and audio exhibition, in collaboration with Tom Gould, is running in Auckland until this Friday so you can hear the stories in person, but if you’re not in Auckland, you can listen to their stories via Spotify. Image: Voices of Hope

What to read: On Call by Ineke Meredith
Ineke Meredith is a Kiwi general surgeon, and also a mother – she is releasing her memoir, On Call. “I wrote this over my years in surgery, through many laughs and tears. It’s about the ups and downs, the heartbreaks and laughs. A few years ago I wondered if these stories could be published”, and the rest is, as they say, history. On Call, full of extraordinary stories, is due in bookstores this week. Image: Harper Collins

What to watch: Dune: Part Two
Following the 2021 box office smash Dune, Zendaya and Timothee Chalamet are back alongside an incredible cast (Austin Butler, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Florence Pugh, to name a few) for Dune: Part Two. This is the second big screen installment of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of author Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic. You can see Dune: Part Two in cinemas now. Image: Dune Movie

What to eat: Gluten free meal ideas & sweet treats
The explore pages on social media can sometimes bring up accounts you may not have discovered otherwise which brings me to one of this month’s finds – Maria Nova’s Health Instagram. I’m gluten free, like I know many others are and love finding new recipes (there’s dairy free and more on there too!) – Maria’s page has some great nutritious meal ideas and sweet treat recipes – check out her account @itsmarianova. Image: Maria Nova Health

Who to follow: Bad Boy Bru
The ‘for you’ page on Instagram has served up this cute gem – who doesn’t love some lighthearted and fun content involving a sweet animal on their feed? I give you Bad Boy Bru, an adorable dog who starts the videos with a cheeky vibe, “what’s up b*tches”… When you need a moment to just watch a funny video, you can have a gander for yourself – @badboy_bru
