Interview: Oh Honey

I was lucky enough to spend ten minutes with Oh Honey, a folk / pop duo. Their new single “Be Okay” has started to play on radio this week in New Zealand and did I mention they have just completed a tour with Ed Sheeran and The Fray over the summer in America!

There is something special about Mitchy Collins and Danielle Bouchard, they have a great outlook on life, they want to create fun, positive, feel good music and they are passionate about always being honest and not listening to anyone who tries to change them.

How does it feel to have their debut single do so well and create waves in so many different countries?

It’s a dream come true and the next goal is to tour and visit some of those places, New Zealand and Australia are at the top of the list!

Why do you think “Be Okay” has been so well received?

Because it is positive and uplifting. When you hear a song that lifts you up, you feel good, there is enough sad songs out there. People respond well to feeling good.

The song is titled ‘Be Okay’ why is that?

It is actually from one of our favorite quotes ‘I hate to spoil the ending but everything is going to be okay, and if it’s not okay, then it’s not the end’

Was making feel good music a strategic move or did it happen organically?

It happened organically, we are overjoyed by the way it is being received by so many people.

What is the best advice you have been given?

To be honest, as honest as possible. To not listen to anyone who is trying to change you, to be humble and to go after your dreams, don’t ever listen to anyone who says your dreams are crazy, dreams are crazy and if you are crazy enough to go after it you will achieve everything you set your mind to. Never give up, do everything in your power to achieve  your dream and never listen to anyone who thinks you are crazy or suggest you get a back up plan!

One key point that stuck with me that Danielle said her mother told her was to ‘control what you can control’ in an industry of so many moving pieces and unknowns and life’s little surprises, you really can only control the things you let in to your heart and mind and what you do with that.
